Endodontics

Endodontic Services

Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and injuries related to the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels). The most common procedure performed in endodontics is root canal therapy, but endodontic care encompasses a variety of treatments aimed at saving damaged or infected teeth.

Root Canal Therapy:

This is the most common and well-known procedure in endodontics. When the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or other issues, a root canal is performed to remove the damaged tissue. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. A crown is often placed on the tooth afterward to restore its strength and function.

Root Canal Retreatment:

In some cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal may develop new infections or complications. Root canal retreatment involves removing the old filling material, cleaning out the tooth again, and re-sealing the canal. This procedure may be necessary if the original root canal treatment didn’t fully eliminate the infection or if a new issue arises.

Apicoectomy (Root-End Surgery):

This surgical procedure is performed when a root canal treatment is not enough to clear an infection. During an apicoectomy, the endodontist removes the tip of the tooth's root (apex) along with any infected tissue, then seals the root canal. This is typically done when an infection persists after a traditional root canal procedure.

Pulpotomy:

A pulpotomy involves the removal of the infected or damaged pulp from the crown of the tooth (the upper part). This treatment is often used for primary (baby) teeth or in cases where the infection has not spread deeply into the root of the tooth. After the procedure, the tooth is sealed to prevent further infection.

Pulp Vitality Testing:

This diagnostic test is used to assess the health of the tooth’s pulp. It helps determine if there is any infection or damage to the pulp that requires treatment. Vitality testing can involve thermal, electric, or other tests to assess how the pulp is reacting.

Traumatic Injury Treatment:

If a tooth has been injured due to an accident, fall, or trauma (such as being knocked out of the socket), endodontists can help treat the injury. Depending on the severity, treatments may include root canal therapy or other procedures to save and stabilize the tooth.

Treatment of Cracked or Fractured Teeth:

Endodontists are also involved in treating cracked or fractured teeth, particularly those where the crack extends to the pulp or root. Treatment may involve a root canal to clean and seal the damaged tissue, preventing infection and further damage.
